Preparing for New York Fashion Week 2008, New York Fashion Awards co founder Jade Zdero discovered to her amazement that New York had no city-name fashion awards to call its own. So she moved quickly to put this right.
“Given the international cachet of New York fashion, we went for categories that are easily understood and recognised by anyone anywhere on the planet.”
With the New York fashion industry blessed with A list talent, deciding on the nominees for each category would take a cool head as well as passion. New York Fashion Awards co founder Shane Fielding adds:
“We needed to hear opinion out there (‘out there’ meaning any club, store, boutique, gig or runway show where New York Fashion loyalists chill!) We then published our first New York Fashion Awards short list of nominees on the web - and were overwhelmed with feedback: comments and more nominations from over 30 countries as varied as Germany, Brazil, Australia: ensuring New York Fashion Awards are local and international from Day 1.”
Once the list of categories and nominees was formed by creators and consumers of New York fashion alike, it was down to voters to take the Awards onto another level: a global election – in this election year – on exactly what the people really feel about their New York Fashion icons. Such an open, wide ranging voting process has never before been possible. 11, 294 votes cast in 10 days was a perfect start. And the results of these votes have been as exciting and unpredictable as the spirit of New York.
As of May 1st 2008, the Awards are now owned by Kris Chard, to take New York Fashion Awards to another level.
